Frequently Asked Questions
Why do some players not have any pronunciation clips in the guide?
Unfortunately, not every player has a publicly available clip of them saying their own name or a reliable native speaker saying their name. To avoid sharing clips with erroneous pronunciations, some players have no clips. If you find a clip we are missing, please send it to @WSLNames on Twitter or wslnames@gmail.com.
Can I just use the "Text Pronunciation" guides?
Text pronunciation guides are included next to many players' names but are not a reliable source on their own. Many people will pronounce a text guide differently, resulting in erroneous pronunciations. Additionally, for some pronunciation sounds, they cannot be written easily in English script. Using the audio clips is the best way to hear the correct pronunciation.
Why have you included British players in the guide?
Many British players' names are mispronounced, even by native English speakers. The guide is also used by non-native English speakers.
How does this guide differ from other available pronunciation guides?
This guide aims to provide clips from the players saying their own names along with some limited text pronunciation notes. Pronunciation notes alone are often not read the same. In some cases, a native speaker pronunciation is used.
The audio clips are too fast, how can I slow them down?
For YouTube audio clips, click on the cog symbol to access the settings and then change the playback speed. For some players, slowed-down audio clips from native speakers are available in the last column in the guide.
How do I send in suggestions for the guide?
If you find a clip we are missing or find any mistakes, please send it to @WSLNames on Twitter or wslnames@gmail.com.
